THE SECOND TRIMESTER:
15 Weeks to 27 Weeks

MONTH 4
What's Going on: Your fetus looks like a fully formed, tiny human being now, although its out-of-proportion head does have an ET-like, alien quality. Its parchment-thin skin is covered with an ultra fine layer of hair called lanugo. Eyebrows and hair have begun to grow. The heartbeat is getting stronger, and the fetus performs functions like sleeping, waking, kicking, swallowing, and even urinating. Some mothers will experience a sensation called quickening — the fluttering feeling of their babies’ movements. If this is your first pregnancy, however, you may just think it’s that cold pizza you ate for breakfast.

MONTH 5
What's Going On:
Between 20 and 23 weeks is when most first-time moms-to-be notice their babies’ kicks, thrusts, and tossing from side to side — an exciting if somewhat bizarre sensation at first. At up to a pound in weight and 12 inches long by the end of this month, the fetus really begins to make its presence known. Your baby has begun to practice breathing now and may even be sucking its thumb. Your baby can hear, too, so maybe it’s time to switch from hard rock to a little Mozart and start building those math skills (yes, believe it or not, someone has actually done a study to examine that connection).

MONTH 6
What's Going On:
Your baby’s movements are quickly progressing from gentle jabs to somersaults that may keep you up at night. Fetuses tend to be lulled to sleep during the day as you stroll through your routine. Then, when you lay your exhausted self down, the good times start to roll. The sad fact: Your baby couldn’t care less about your sleep habits, a trait that will be around for several years.
