The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends gaining 25 to 35 pounds (35 to 45 for twins) if your weight is considered normal at the beginning of the pregnancy.

What causes morning sickness and how can I combat it?
Morning sickness (also known as pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting) may be connected to the increase in the hormones progesterone, estrogen, and human chorionic gonadotropin — the same ones responsible for the growth of the fetus.
Some recommendations to try:

  • Eat small meals every three to four hours.

  • Sip water or other decaffeinated beverages often to avoid dehydration.

  • Keep salty, crunchy carbohydrate snacks on hand (saltines are the classic).

  • Chew gum or suck on candy.

  • Take a walk in the fresh air.

  • Try vitamin B6.

  • Investigate alternative remedies.

Make Healthy Food Choices Now that you are eating for two! The most important thing to remember throughout the next nine months: Quality, not quantity, counts. Pregnant women should consume about 2,200 calories a day — between 200 and 500 more than usual, depending on what stage of pregnancy you’re in and your pre-pregnancy weight. Still, your baby’s health depends on your getting the proper amount of calories and the full range of appropriate vitamins and minerals, so you can’t afford to skimp. Many women crave good-for-you foods, such as fresh fruits, crispy salads, hearty breads and pastas, and protein-packed meats and fish — just what the baby ordered.
cover Feeling Fit:

Regular physical activity during pregnancy can have special benefits, like lessening discomfort and fatigue, enhancing well-being, and promoting early recovery after delivery. Yoga, walking, swimming and cycling on a stationary bicycle are the safest exercises for pregnant women.

What To Avoid:

  • Alcohol, smoking and second hand smoke, illegal drugs. Advise me about prescription or over-the-counter drugs you are taking. Saunas, hot tubs, or steam rooms.
  • Caffeine, found in tea, coffee, soft drinks and chocolate.
  • X-rays.
  • Handling cat litter or eating undercooked meat. They can cause toxoplasmosis, an infection that can harm your baby.
