Since it's opening in 1972, it has evolved into an extensive health care system serving North Harris, Montgomery, Walker, Waller and Liberty counties. Today it is North Houston's largest and most comprehensive facility with a 498-bed capacity, 1700 employees and a medical staff of more than 550 physicians who offer comprehensive medical services in over 40 medical specialties.

I have been on staff of Houston Northwest Medical Center since 1979. I have watched it grow and change and keep pace with the ever-changing needs of the community. With the population in the 1960 area increasing there became the need for a facility designed for "Women's Health". The need was met with the opening of The Women's Atrium in 1989.

The Women's Atrium is a facility devoted exclusively to the health needs of women of all ages. This includes inpatient care, Breast Health Services, osteoporosis screening and ultrasound in The Women's Atrium Diagnostic Center, maternity services with 24-hour on-site coverage by neonatalogist and Special Care Nursery, and The Women's Atrium Fitness Center, which includes exercise options and personal training just for women.

The Women's Atrium Diagnostic Center in Houston Northwest Medical Center was recently awarded a three-year term of accreditation in stereotactic breast biopsy as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Only one other center in Texas has this accreditation. "This voluntary accreditation assures women who require a stereotactic breast biopsy that the equipment, physicians and staff are held to strict quality standards", says Ellen Moore, R.N., M.S., director of the Women's Diagnostic Center.

I have always been happy with the care my patients have received by the staff at Northwest Medical Hospital. The care my patients receive is of the utmost importance and I feel any physician who deems quality care important would only want to practice at a hospital that gives quality care.

The maternity unit is presently delivering 200 plus patients per month. There has been a major renovation to the Atrium in the overall décor with a modern color scheme in all the rooms including L&D. There are presently 10 LDR rooms, and a fully equipped antepartum unit able to closely monitor high-risk patients. There are full time in-house neonatalogists to carefully watch over the nursery at all times. I continue to be reassured by the presence of these dedicated doctors to care for any potentially sick newborns. The reason I have continued to practice medicine at Houston Northwest Medical Center Hospital for 31 years is because of the quality of care my patients have always received.

TOPS Surgical Specialty Hospital was started in the early 1980's to give both patient and physician an alternative place to have outpatient surgery. At that time in the United States there was not the emphasis on outpatient surgery as there is today. The foresight of physicians in the 1960 area created a unique place which combines both a personalized atmosphere as well as a highly sophisticated high tech center for outpatient surgery. This unique blend which started in 1980 has continued into the present day and will continue into the next century.

I have been a part of TOPS since the very beginning and have always found my patients to receive excellent care. I myself have had surgery there as well as my family. In the early 1990's a small inpatient unit was started for patients that may require 24 to 48 hours post-op care by specialized nursing personnel prior to going home.

This small inpatient unit is staffed by specialized nurses who are trained in post-op care. This unit encourages the family to play a role in the care of their loved one. If a family member wishes to spend the night they are accommodated with meals as well as sleeping arrangements.

In the many years I have worked at TOPS I have been extremely pleased with the care my patients have received.
