  Mammograms and Your Health

One of the most important things a woman can do for themselves and their family is to be diligent about their mammograms. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American women - lung cancer is still the leader.

Routine mammograms on a yearly basis starting at the Age of 40 can save your life.
Breast cancer takes 8 years before it can be detected by self-examination.
The doubling time of a breast cancer cell is once every 120 days…so after 8 years it has grown to approximately 1 centimeter in size. The average person doing self breast examination should be able to feel it at that size. With routine screening mammograms it can detected up to 3 years prior to detection by self examination.

If it can be detected before it can be felt…the survival rate is 98%.
The only way it can be detected early is by routine mammogram screening. To beat this deadly disease, which kills 40,000 women each year, you must find it early.

TOPS Comprehensive Breast Center has recently opened its doors. This new Breast Center provides state of the art diagnostic equipment as well as a caring, compassionate staff.
What makes a center like this work is of course the quality of the facility but more important is the quality of the radiologist.

Stephen Rose, M.D. heads up this department; he is a nationally recognized expert in breast imaging and diagnostic breast procedures.

Recently Dr. Rose took me on a tour of the center showing me the latest in their state of the art equipment. I was extremely impressed…the new computer imaging equipment far surpasses any in the past.

I urge all women starting at the age of 35 to get a baseline mammogram and then yearly starting at age 40.

You may call and make an appointment at TOPS Comprehensive Breast Center either prior, the day of, or after your yearly Gynecological exam. Since the Center is next door to my office, make your exam the same day you have an appointment to see me.

I have standing orders at the Center for both a Mammogram and Bone Densities so all it takes is a phone call. If you sign a release form the Center will do the leg work in retrieving your previous mammogram.

There simply is no excuse not to have a mammogram.
