Alternative Treatment for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

The medical term for heavy menstrual bleeding is 'menorrhagia'. About 1 in 5 women experience heavy menstrual bleeding. If this type of bleeding is starting to affect your functionability there is a easy treatment method available called 'The NovaSure Impedance Controlled Endometrial Ablation System'. This treatment is for the pre-menopausal women with heavy menstrual bleeding who have completed childbearing.

The present treatment options available are:

  • Drug Therapy – Drug therapy such as oral contraceptives that will treat hormonal imbalances. It is greater than 50% successful but has to be continued in order to remain effective.

  • D & C (Dilation & Curettage) – This is a common outpatient procedure that scrapes the inside lining of the uterus. Usually this procedure is just a temporary fix of bleeding problems.

  • Hysterectomy – This is a surgical procedure that removes the uterus and is the only true and definitive treatment for menorrhagia. This is a major surgical procedure with hospitalization and recovery of 3 to 6 weeks.

  • Endometrial Ablation – This is a minimally invasive  treatment that decreases menstrual flow and can totally stop bleeding completely.

Conventional ablation removes the lining with an electrosurgical tool or laser. This method reduces bleeding in approximately 85% of patients. This conventional method has  higher risk including perforation of the uterus, infection and bleeding.

A new generation  endometrial ablation device is available that has significantly decreased side effects and complications.

The NovaSure system is a new generation ablation method, which provides an effective, and minimally invasive  alternative to hysterectomy. This quick procedure requires no incisions and generally takes less than 5 minutes to perform and what's more we can do it in the office.

Most women will see a significant reduction in the level of their menstrual bleeding. In controlled clinical studies, a majority of patients returned for follow-up at 12 months had their bleeding reduced to light or moderate periods and many reported that their bleeding had stopped completely. Many women also experience the added benefits of a significant reduction in painful menstruation and reduction of PMS systems.

The procedure is performed in a office setting but can also be done at a outpatient facility. Most women can return to normal activity within a day or two. Sexual activity can be resumed after your first post-op check-up, usually in 7 days.

The NovaSure procedure is quick, simple, safe with satisfactory results reported in over 90% of patients.
