A million people have been treated with Botox Cosmetic since its FDA approval in 2002. In fact, Botox Cosmetic is the only FDA-approved treatment for the temporary reduction of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in patients 18 to 65 years of age. Ten minutes - a few tiny injections - and within days there's a noticeable improvement. There's no recovery or downtime. And results last up to four months.
The lines that appear between your brows actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time. Two muscles are largely responsible for frown lines between the brows. When these muscles contract, they draw the brows together. As skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning can result in those moderate to severe lines between your brows. Botox Cosmetic works by blocking nerve impulses, which reduces the movement of those muscles. With less movement, the skin surface gradually smoothes out, and moderate to severe frown lines between your brows begin to fade.
Botox Cosmetic is a purified protein. It is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce certain facial wrinkles. During treatment, very low doses of Botox Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those wrinkles. Botox Cosmetic is the only treatment of its type approved by the FDA for this use. It requires no recovery time and causes little discomfort.
Botox Cosmetic is a quick and minimally invasive treatment. In my office we first numb the area to be injected with a numbing cream. This takes about 15 to 20 minutes, then several tiny injections into the muscles that cause the wrinkles. No anesthesia is required except for the anesthetic cream and ice pack. The entire procedure takes approximately ten minutes. Discomfort is minimal and brief - most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. You may resume normal activity immediately.
You can expect to see results within days after your treatment and will continue to improve for up to a week. By day 30 in a patient clinical study, 89% of patients judged the severity as moderate or better. Visible results can last up to four months. After that, you may be ready to return for a follow-up treatment. The most common side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea
Botox has been used therapeutically for over 15 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is approved in more than 75 countries. Botox for therapeutic use remains one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.
According to a recent survey of 204 dermatologist and plastic surgeons, Botox has the highest satisfactory rating of all physician-administered treatments in 2003 and 2004. And for the past 3 years, Botox was the most popular physician-administered cosmetic procedure in the United States. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery also estimates that almost 3 million people were treated with Botox in 2004 alone.
